We recommend you to keep a Zip repair tool on hand so that whenever the corruption occurs, you can use it to repair the damaged Zip file and get your data back as soon as possible.

Are there free ways or freeware to repair corrupt Zip files?

Yes, many popular Zip tools, such as WinZip, WinRAR, and 7-Zip, support to repair corrupt Zip archives, as below:

1. Using WinZip to repair damaged Zip archives

WinZip is a trialware. During the evaluation period, you can use all functions in it. To repair corrupt Zip archives with WinZip:

  1. In the Start menu search box, input “Command Prompt”.
  2. In the search result, right-click “Command Prompt” and select Run as administrator.
  3. In the command prompt, input the following command and press Enter:“C:\Program Files\WinZip\wzzip” -yf xxx.zipwhere wzzip is the command-line version of WinZip, and xxx.zip is the full path to the damaged Zip archive.
  4. WinZip will repair the damaged Zip archive from the command line.

2. Using WinRAR to repair corrupt Zip files

WinRAR is also a trialware. During the evaluation period, you can use all functions in it. To repair damaged Zip files with WinRAR:

  1. Start WinRAR.
  2. Select the corrupt Zip archive file to be repaired.
  3. Click Tools > Repair archive.
  4. In the pop-up dialog box, select the folder to put the repaired archive and choose Treat the corrupt archive as ZIP.
  5. Click OK, WinRAR will repair the corrupt Zip archive.

3. Using 7-Zip to repair corrupt Zip archives

7-Zip is freeware. You can use all functions without any limitations. To repair corrupt Zip archives with 7-Zip:

  1. Start 7-Zip.
  2. Click File > Open to open the corrupt Zip archive.
  3. If 7-Zip can open the archive, then it has ignored the corruption in the Zip archive and extracted data inside it properly. You can extract items inside it as needed.

If WinZip, WinRAR, and 7-Zip fail to repair the corrupt file, then the file is badly damaged. You can use our Zip repair tool to repair it.

What is the CRC value in Zip files?

Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is an algorithm that can be used to detect changes in data. In a Zip archive, when a file item is archived into it, other than the compressed file data, the CRC value of the uncompressed file data is also calculated and stored together. Thus when the file item is extracted, the unzip program should also calculate the CRC value of the uncompressed data and compare it with the stored one. If they are the same, then the file data should be intact. However, if they are different, then this is called a CRC error, which means the file data has been changed. So, we use the CRC value to check whether the file data in the archive are corrupt or not.

CRC value is very strict. So even if one byte of the file data is changed, the CRC value will be inconsistent with the original one. In such a case, many Zip apps will refuse to unzip the file data. But actually, most of the bytes are still OK. Our tool can recover these data from the archive, reduce the data losses.

Also sometimes, the file data are intact, but the CRC value itself is damaged. In such a case, when other Zip apps refuse to extract the file data, our repair software can also help you.

What are the advantages of your tool over other similar tools?

There are many similar repair software in the market, such as Diskinternals Zip Repair, Object Fix Zip, etc. We have made comprehensive tests on our Zip file repair tool and the main competitors in the market. Based on the test results, our tool has the best recovery rate and the most comprehensive features.

How does the demo version differ from the full version?

The demo version and the full version use the same recovery engine. However, after the recovery process, the demo version will show a list of recoverable items in the archive, including the file name, file size, and file type. But it will not output these items.

How long does it take to repair a Zip file?

It depends on many factors, including:

  1. Zip file size. It takes more time to repair a larger file.
  2. The number of items in the Zip file. It takes more time to repair a file with more items.
  3. The compression algorithm for each item. If an item uses an algorithm that provides a greater compression, then it takes more time to repair and extract it.
