Why You Should Zip Your Files

You’ve probably received an email with a .zip attachment, or downloaded a software file with a .zip extension. Most software developers choose to use zip archive format to compress software files so that they will be easy to upload to the internet. Here are some of the reasons you should consider zipping your files.

  1. To meet email restrictions: Most email service providers give a limit on the size of files you can attach. It is therefore difficult to send large files like software, and large work documents through email without zipping first. Smaller files are also faster to transfer and will save you upload time for urgent emails.
  2. To send many documents in one file: The beauty of archive files is that you can compress more than one file into an archive file format. In a case where you want to send several related documents, you can zip them for easy organization and retrieval.
  3. For easy distribution over the internet: If you are uploading a large file to your blog or website for public access, it is advisable to zip it first. A good number of internet users do not have access to high speed networks and huge downloads will take them a long time. This also helps to reduce the data charges incurred when downloading the file on paid networks.
  4. To reduce file size on disk: It is a healthy data security practice to always have some space remaining on your disk. Zipping some of the large files that are rarely in use will free up some disk space and prevent some risks like system crashes.

When zipping files to save storage space, you should keep in mind that some file types like JPEG images are already highly compressed. Their size after zipping will therefore not be very different.
