The article explains the need of table relationships in a MS Access and how users can change them.
Tables are the backbone of any database in Microsoft Access. We usually work with single tables, multiple tables, and queries and relationships between tables.
It’s necessary to understand the relationships of tables in Access in a better way to avoid issues like data redundancy and critical errors. Users should be able to create, view, and delete a table relationship according to different functions and usage. The article will discuss the ways in which users can change a table relationship in quick time.
There are basically three types of relationships between tables viz. One to Many relationship, Many to Many relationship and One to One Relationship. Access uses these relationships to join tables according to their function or usage. Once the relationships are created in Access you can change and alter them according to your preference. Most of the times, we change the Access database design and thus it’s required to change the relationships between the tables too.
Changing the Table Relationships
We usually create and work with table relationships with the help of relationship window in Access. You can drag a field from the Field List pane too, which shows the available fields in related tables and in other tables.
If you wish to change the table relationship, you can do so by selecting the relationship from ‘Relationships’ window and then performing the required edits. You need to select the relationship line, so you have to position your cursor in a way that it points at the line. In Access, a table relationship is displayed by a line drawn between the tables like a connector.
Click the line and once it’s selected, it will become thicker than before. If it does you can then double click the line. You can also click on the option of ‘Edit Relationship’ under Tools group in the Design tab to do the same.
Now you have to make further changes in the ‘Edit relationship’ dialogue box.
Go to the Database tools and select Relationships from the Relationship Section. Now to display all the relationships, you can go to the Design Tab and select ‘All Relationships’ from the Relationships group. It will display the relationships and they are represented with lines.
Now click on those relationships that you want to modify or change, and when they are selected they will appear thicker. You can now double click on the relationship line and the ‘Edit Relationship’ dialogue box will appear. The relationship type will be shown at the bottom. Here, you can make all the changes and once you are done, simply click OK. You can also change or set the Join type. There are other options as well in the dialogue box like ‘Enforce Referential Integrity’, ‘Cascade Update related fields’ and ‘Cascade Delete Related records’
The changes will be made in the table relationships. You can also change the queries and table or queries from any of the side of relationship.
For Access users it is very critical that the data they have stored in the database remains safe all the time. However a database crash can completely change the scenario and make the data inaccessible due to Access corruption. In times like these you need a powerful recovery tool like DataNumen Access Repair.
