How to Repair a Corrupted TAR Archive and Access the Files Within

If you use Linux and you want to archive your files, you usually create a TAR file. A TAR file is an archive file that allows you to save several files in just one file. Unfortunately, TAR files can be corrupted but we can show you how you can quickly fix that.

Linux users use TAR files, which is short for Tap Archive, to save multiple files. A file that is marked with the TAR extension is one that is in the Consolidated Unix Archive.

TAR files are commonly recognized archive formulas so they can be opened by most zip/unzip tools. TAR files are popular among Linux users because they are a convenient way to archive important files and data. It’s also more convenient to create a TAR file with multiple files in it and send that over the internet or a network then to send those same files individually.

Corrupted during transmission

Much like any other sort of archive files however, TAR files can get corrupted. TAR files usually get corrupted when we are trying to send them from one machine to another.

The TAR file might work perfectly well on one computer, but when it is transferred to another computer the use of that computer can’t open the archive because it is corrupted.

Usually this is because the transfer was interrupted in some fashion, maybe the internet went down during the transfer process or there was a power outage.

TAR files can also be corrupted if you are trying to transfer them to an external storage device. This can occur if you try and remove the device early, like if you just pull out a flash drive without ejecting it properly.

How to fix a corrupted TAR file

If you cannot open a TAR file and you suspect it is because the archive is corrupted, you can fix it and recover the files by using DataNumen TAR Repair. This date recovery program can scan TAR archives and recover the data contained within.

After you have installed DataNumen TAR Repair, you need to run it. Before you do so, however, make sure any other applications that might be able to access the TAR archive have been closed.

After opening the program, select the corrupt TAR archive that you need repaired. There are three ways that you can do this:

1. If you know the name of the archive that is corrupted, type it into the search bar.

2. Click the button marked with “…” to browse the computer’s drives and find the file.

3. You can also click the search button, marked with a little magnifying glass and the program will locate TAR files on your computer.

After you have located the file that needs to be fixed, click on the “Start Repair” button. If the repair is starting correctly, you should see a progress bar that indicates the repairs progress.

If the repair process is finished, a message box informing you of that will appear.

Note that DataNumen TAR Repair automatically names and saves the fixed file as “file name_fixed.tar” You should now be able to open and extract the files in the archive. We recommend that you save these extracted files under a different name and in different folder than the archived file.
