This post examines different approaches you can use to get your mailbox operating normally in case you discover your OST files were deleted or damaged.
Regardless of our best efforts to protect OST files, sometimes they get corrupted or deleted by accident. This can happen on the server-side or on your local machine. Such scenarios can make it impossible to access your email. What can you do to restore your mailbox?
Recovering mailbox manually
If you are unable to sync your OST files with the Exchange Server mailbox, confirm whether your profile on the server-side is intact. If this is the issue, disconnect the internet and convert your mailbox data from .ost format to .pst files.
To achieve this, open MS Outlook and navigate to File options. Here, launch the import and export wizard, then select the option that allows you to export a .pst Outlook data file. Locate your OST mailbox data and select where you want to save it. When you hit the finish button, Outlook creates the PST mailbox data. Now repeat the process, but now import your mailbox data from your new PST files to your Exchange Server. This should synchronize your mailbox.
If your mailbox on the server-side is deleted or modified for any reason, your OST file on your desktop/laptop is orphaned. This means that you cannot sync the mailbox with what is on the server-side. If the OST data is healthy, reconnect your mailbox with the first Exchange Server using the original MAPI address. If all works well, you should be able to recover your mailbox immediately.
Recovering mailbox using automated tools
Unfortunately, things are not always that straightforward. The above mailbox recovery methods can only work if your OST files are not corrupt. If the data on the OST files is corrupt, using automated data recovery tools can save your mailbox.
Before choosing a third-party OST recovery tool to restore your mailbox, consider how effective the application is in fixing similar issues. You can get this information from customer reviews. Also, go for an application that is easy to use and doesn’t require special training to use.
One application that meets these parameters is DataNumen Exchange Recovery. When compared with other data recovery tools in its class, it tops its competition with an impressive recovery rate of 96.78%. The beauty with this tool is that you can use it in diverse situations, for example, when the mailbox data on the server is corrupted or deleted. It allows you to convert OST mailbox data to PST files for easy access.
To use this tool, download it from the company website and install on your computer. Close MS Outlook application or any other software that could access your OST mailbox data. Now start the software and choose the OST file you wish to recover. Choose the output file format and where you want to save it. Although the application can auto-detect the file formats depending on the Outlook version installed on your desktop, the process takes time and it is advisable to do it manually.
Once this is done, select the ‘Start Recovery’ button. This will start the repair/recovery of your OST file. You can monitor the recovery process on the progress bar. Once this is completed, a message will pop up indicating the objects that have been recovered. To access this data, launch Outlook and open the PST file. Your mailbox data will appear under the recovered folder.
