How to Recover Corrupt BKF Files

In this post, you’ll learn about BFK files, what’s their importance, and find simple ways to recover BFK files in case they get corrupted.

How to Recover Corrupt BKF Files

Backup files play a very critical role in the recovery of data when systems do not work as expected. In such cases, backup files are used to restore systems to previous stable states. If these files get corrupted, people risk irrecoverable data loss.

What are BFK files?

Windows operating systems come with a backup utility that allows users to preserve files as a contingency measure against data loss. When launched, the utility prompts you to choose the drive you wish to save your backup files. This can be a drive on your local machine or network. It also allows you to identify the information you wish to back up.  These backup files come with a ‘.bkf’ file extension. Such files are accessible through Microsoft’s Windows Backup and NT Backup/Restore utilities.

You can automate this process so that data saved in your target folders is backed up within a specified time. This can vary from minutes to days depending on your preferences. It will also depend on how often the new information is added to the target folders. If the data on your computer is changed often, it’s advisable to back up your data after a short time. This minimizes the risk of massive data loss incidents.

Although these backup files are one way of securing your data, they can also get damaged and become inaccessible. This can happen due to various reasons such as malware attack, physical damage to the storage media, and abrupt system shutdown during the backup process. In case this happens, here are easy ways to get back your backup files.

1.      Use the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility

If your backup files are corrupt, you can attempt to restore them using the Windows NT Backup Restore utility. To achieve this, launch the backup/restore wizard by running the NT Backup file as an administrator. In the pop-up window that appears, opt for the ‘Restore files and Settings’ and click next. Choose the ‘.bkf’ files you want to restore and then click next to select where you would like to save the repaired files. The next step allows you to choose the repair options. Once you choose your desired restore option, click next followed by ‘Finish’ on the proceeding step to wrap up the process.

It is important to note that this process may not function on all Windows operating systems such as Windows XP. In addition, if the Ntmsapi.dll and Vssapi.dll files are missing, it will not accomplish the repair operation. Another problem associated with this procedure is that 100% recovery of files is not guaranteed and may even damage the source files.

2.      Recover corrupt files with DataNumen BKF Repair

The DataNumen BKF Repair is an automated data recovery tool specially built to restore damaged BKF files. Therefore, instead of using the above manual process, you can use this tool and complete your recovery process in fewer steps.
